Uses

  • Evaluation of superficial masses Abscess.
  • Diagnosis of lymphadenopathy.
  • Evaluation of intracavitary masses.
  • Synovial fluid analysis Arthritis: septic.

Advantages

  • Simple.
  • Can be performed on conscious unsedated patients in some cases.
  • Often yields definitive diagnosis.

Disadvantages

  • May require repeat procedure or further investigation if initial results inconclusive.
  • Aspiration of intracavitary masses should be guided by ultrasound.
