Cardiovascular: ECG

Synonym(s): Electrocardiography

Contributor(s): Molly Varga, Anna Meredith

Introduction

  • Electrocardiography is a method for interpretation of the electrical activity of the heart using electrodes placed externally.
  • It can be used to evaluate heart rate and rhythm as well as heart chamber size and position.
  • Because the relationship between electrical changes and chamber size is not well documented in rabbits, alternative methods of diagnosis should be used for confirmation if alterations are detected.

Uses

  • Diagnosis of and monitoring of cardiac arrhythmias and conduction disturbances

Advantages

  • Non-invasive, possible in conscious animal.
  • Minimal expertise for recording required.

Disadvantages

  • Expertise required for interpretation.
  • Specialist equipment required.
