Hematology: red blood cell count

Overview

  • The number of red blood cells per unit of volume of blood.
  • Usually measured in conjunction with other RBC parameters, and used to calculate mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH).
  • Is affected by changes in plasma volume, so should be interpreted with respect to the patients' hydration status.

Technician (extrinsic) limitations

  • Manual method has low accuracy (+/- 20%) and low repeatability.
