Hematology: neutrophil

Synonym(s): Pseudoeosinophil, Heterophil

Contributor(s): Molly Varga, Vetstream Ltd, Michael Waters

Overview

  • Rabbit neutrophils are more properly termed heterophils because they do not stain as neutral using Romanowski stains.
  • The cytoplasm contains both small acidophilic granules and large eosinophilic granules, however it functions similarly to neutrophils from other species.
  • May be confused with eosinophils on blood films.
  • Neutrophils/heterophils phagocytose and digest foreign material in acute infectious or non-infectious inflammation.
  • The degree of neutrophil increase (neutrophilia/heterophilia) and the neutrophil/heterophil to lymphocyte ratio provides a valuable diagnostic (in combination with other tests) and prognostic tool in many diseases.
  • Rabbits, in response to inflammation, very often respond with a relative neutrophilia/heterophilia (increase in percentage of neutrophils/heterophils) rather than an absolute increase. Correspondingly the percentage of lymphocytes decreases.
  • Regenerative and degenerative left-shifts are uncommon in the rabbit.
  • Neutrophils/heterophils are short-lived (approximately 4 days).
