Indications

  • Hypocalcemia   Hypocalcemia  , although this is rare in rabbits due to their unique calcium metabolism. Occasionally lactation tetany can occur in nursing does.
  • Uterine inertia, although this is rare in rabbits.
  • Management of hyperkalemic cardiotoxicity associated with urinary obstruction. Calcium gluconate rapidly corrects arrhythmias but has a short duration of effect (5-10 min).

Interactions

with other drugs

  • Do not add calcium salts to IV solutions containing bicarbonate, carbonate, phosphate, sulfate or tartrate salts.
  • Arrythmias   Heart: arrhythmia   may develop if IV calcium is given to patients on digoxin   Digoxin  therapy.
  • Antagonizes the effects of verapamil   Verapamil  .
  • Calcium gluconate cannot be used with metoclopramide   Metoclopramide  , a common medication used to treat gastrointestinal stasis   Gastric dilation and stasis  in rabbits.
  • Cannot be used with propofol   Propofol  , amphotericin B and methylprednisolone   Methylprednisolone  sodium succinate although these are rarely administered in rabbit medicine.
