Introduction

  • Vitamin E   Vitamin E  exhibits very low toxicity and therefore hypervitaminosis E is extremely rare.
  • Cause: it could theoretically occur in rabbits fed on an incorrectly formulated diet   Nutrition: dietary requirements  .
  • Signs: it has not yet been reported in the veterinary literature.
  • Diagnosis: dietary analysis, hematology, blood biochemistry.
  • Treatment: none as rare.
  • Prognosis: depends on severity.

Presenting signs

  • Not reported in rabbits.
  • Signs in humans include diarrhea, flatulence and bloating; this progresses to lethargy and weakness.

Acute presentation

  • No rabbit specific information recorded.
  • Reduced growth rate reported in chicks, with reduced skeletal calcification, increased requirement for vitamin D, reduced PCV and increased prothrombin time.

Cost considerations

  • Possibly significant in a breeding colony situation.
