Endoscopy: equipment

Contributor(s): Sarah Pellett

Introduction

  • With advances in endoscopy over the last few years, the procedure is now being recognized as a useful diagnostic tool in the rabbit.
  • The majority of pet rabbits are small, making the ideal candidates for minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical endoscopy.
  • A variety of different scopes and instruments are available but most procedures can be achieved with a basic set of instruments, a rigid endoscope (2.7 mm telescope), a good light source, a camera and a monitor.
  • For most practices, the 2.7 mm rigid telescope offers the greatest versatility for most exotic companion animals.
  • A 3 mm fiber optic endoscope is recommended for the majority of flexible endoscopic procedures in the rabbit.
