Introduction

  • Unilateral or bilateral conjunctival ingrowth is an unusual condition seen only in the rabbit. It is difficult to cure and may, if severe, cause visual impairment in the rabbit.
  • Cause: not known.
  • Signs: annulus of conjunctiva growing over the cornea.
  • Diagnosis: examination of the eye.
  • Treatment: resecting the aberrant conjunctiva, and suturing this back to the episclera, and post-operative cyclosporine or local corticosteroids treatment for 3 weeks.

Presentation

  • Superficial ocular changes.

Acute presentation

  • Can be associated with impaired vision.

Age incidence

  • Found mostly in younger rabbits <2 years of age.

Breed predisposition

  • Suggested to be seen more in dwarf breeds Dwarf Lop Netherland Dwarf but no definitive breed incidences have been reported.

Cost considerations

Expensive
  • Topical cyclosporine treatment.
Moderate
  • Surgical treatment.

Special risks

  • All animals which undergo surgery must be under general anesthesia.
