Scintigraphy: renal for GFR

Introduction

  • Use of radionucleotide which is excreted through kidneys allows some assessment of renal function and structure.
  • Used commonly in human medicine.

Uses

  • Assessing renal function:
    • Measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
    • Measurement of effective renal plasma flow (ERPF).

Advantages

  • Measurement of GFR allows earlier detection of renal dysfunction Renal function assessment than elevation of BUN or creatinine:
    • Prior to nephrectomy Ureteronephrectomy.
    • Allows monitoring of patient and assessment of treatment response.
    • Allows dose adjustment prior to treatment with nephrotoxic agents, eg cisplatin Cisplatin.

Disadvantages

  • Cost.
  • Limited availability.
  • Radiation hazard (minimal).
  • Requires patient to be isolated for a period after injection of radionucleotide.
