Contributor(s): Sheilah Robertson, Claire Waters

Introduction

  • Provide regional local anesthesia for the rostral lower lip.

Uses

  • Local anesthesia for minor surgery of rostral lower lip where general anesthesia is contra-indicated.
  • To provide analgesia post operatively for rostral lower lip.

Advantages

  • Avoids risks associated with general anesthesia in high risk individuals for elective, eg removal of skin lesions, or non-elective procedures, eg repair of lacerations.
  • Can be used for emergency procedures when the animal has been recently fed or is suspected of having prolonged gastric emptying time.

Disadvantages

  • In man this is practiced as an intraoral technique providing desensitization for extraoral lesions.
  • Difficulties of temperament and restraint in the cat, unless sedated, favor a percutaneous approach.
