Introduction

  • Enucleation is the treatment of choice if the eye is irreversibly blind and painful, has evidence of intra-ocular tumor or is affected by untreatable panophthalmitis.

Uses

Advantages

  • Removes site of pain and/or infection.
  • Reduces the risk of metastasis from primary intraocular tumors, if surgery is timely.
  • Eliminates the risk of feline post-traumatic ocular sarcoma in later like.
  • Provides an opportunity for histopathological diagnosis, which may identify important information relating to the other eye or systemic disease.

Disadvantages

  • Eliminates any chance at restoring sight.
  • May leave an orbital depression which the owner finds cosmetically unacceptable.
  • Anesthetic risk.
