Introduction

  • Proper ear cleaning is an essential feature of the diagnostic and therapeutic management of ear disease.
  • Routine ear cleaning is not necessary in animals without otitis but becomes an essential part of therapy in cases of otitis.
  • It is not possible to inspect the ear canal without prior removal of debris and hair.
  • Some medications are inactivated by inflammatory debris and secretions.

Uses

  • To maintain the ear canal in a healthy state.
  • Removal of accumulated debris and secretions to allow
    • Adequate otoscopic examination of external ear canal.
    • Penetration of topical ear therapy Therapeutics: ear to ear lining.
  • Removal of small foreign bodies.
  • To prepare site for surgical procedures.

Advantages

  • Relatively simple and rapid.
  • Can be performed by the owner in many cases.

Disadvantages

  • May not remove debris from lower ear canal.
  • If too aggressive, it may lead to rupture of ear drum and irritation.
