Indications

  • Removal of iron from the body following poisoning.
  • It may be useful in the management of reperfusion injury associated with a variety of disorders, eg gastric dilation volvulus (GDV), intestinal torsion   Intestine: strangulated obstruction / hernia  or intussusception   Intussusception  .
    To be effective in the treatment of reperfusion injuries it should be administered prior to reperfusion.
    Data is lacking as to the efficacy of desferrioxamine in reperfusion injury management.
