Sex hormones

Estrogens
  • Initiate behavioral signs of estrus, prepare female reproductive tract for fertilization and develop mammary gland secretory tissue.
  • Have anabolic activity and increase natural uterine defense against infection.
    Do not use in acute uterine infections as   →   absorption of bacterial toxins.
  • Ethinylestradiol*   Ethinylestradiol  . Rarely used in cats.
  • Stilbestrol*   Diethylstilbesterol  . Rarely used in cats.
    May   →    irreversible bone marrow toxicity   →   pancytopenia.

Progestogens

  • Mimic the effects of progesterone: prepare and maintain the female reproductive tract for implantation and pregnancy.
  • Cause development of mammary gland to lactation.
  • Inhibit estrus and ovulation.
  • In males, reduce testosterone production.
    All vary in pharmacological profile and side-effects; liable to produce cystic endometrial hyperplasia, mucometra or pyometra.
  • Do not use in diabetics.
  • Can induce adrenocortical suppression, acromegaly, hair discoloration and alopecia (if given SC).
  • Delmadinone acetate  Delmadinone  hypersexuality and behavioral problems.
  • Medroxyprogesterone acetate  Medroxyprogesterone  . May cause diabetes or pyometra.
  • Progesterone  Progesterone  .
  • Proligestone  Proligestone  to suppress or postpone estrus.

Androgens

  • Promote and maintain primary and secondary anatomical, physical and psychological male sexual characteristics.
  • For hormonal alopecia, mammary tumors and pseudopregnancy with lactation; suppression of estrus.
  • Methyltestosterone  Methyltestosterone  for hormonal alopecia and to reduce libido in males.
  • Testosterone esters  Testosterone  for short term treatment of infertility in male cats.
