Blood pressure: Doppler ultrasound

Introduction

Uses

  • Doppler ultrasound can be used as a method for non-invasive measurement of arterial blood pressure.

Technical details

  • A thin flat transducer containing two crystals is placed on the skin over an artery Blood pressure monitoring 01 .
  • Ultrasound signals emitted by one crystal are reflected back to the second crystal by the moving artery wall.
  • Incident and reflected ultrasound signals are at different frequencies. This is converted to an audible pulsing sound ('whooshing' noise with each pulse).
