Stifle: meniscal mineralization

Introduction

  • Cause: normal anatomy or as a cause or consequence of stifle disease or trauma.
  • Signs: no signs or lameness.
  • Diagnosis: radiographs or CT scan of the stifles.
  • Treatment: conservative management if incidental finding. Careful surgical resection if concerned that it is causing clinical signs?
  • Prognosis: guarded for recurrence, meniscal damage, osteoarthritis.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Meniscal mineralization represents a congenital vestigial structure that should be interpreted as a variant of normal anatomy.
  • Post-traumatic meniscal mineralization is acquired by degeneration or metaplasia after isolated or recurrent trauma or in association with cranial cruciate ligament rupture.
