Pathological effects

  • Human: fever, hemolytic anemia, may be fatal. More common in splenectomized patients.
  • Dog/cat: progressive anemia Anemia: immune-mediated hemolytic ; may be acute or chronic; often subclinical.
  • Cerebral signs due to "sludging" in the cerebral capillaries.

Control

Control via chemotherapies

  • Diminazine aceturate; imidocarbdiproprionate; trypan blue (IV).

Vaccination

  • None in UK.
  • Available for dogs in France.

Other countermeasures

  • Control tick vector.
