Anesthetic monitoring

Introduction

  • Monitoring the patient during an anesthetic procedure is paramount for the successful outcome of the procedure.
  • A good understanding of the anatomic and physiologic characteristics involved in reptile anesthesia is highly beneficial.
  • Parameters that can be monitored in reptiles include:
    • Reflexes.
    • Heart rate.
    • Oxygenation (questionable).
    • Temperature.
  • Obtaining values at rest (before any anesthetic agent is delivered) for heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature may be useful to later monitor those values during anesthesia Anesthesia overview.
