Preputial infection

Introduction

  • Cause: lodging of foreign material (bedding) within preputial folds; usually following copulation as prepuce moist and bedding can get stuck to it.
  • Signs: swelling, erythema of the prepuce, bedding stuck to the prepuce.
  • Diagnosis: physical examination.
  • Treatment: irrigation of the prepuce and removal of foreign material, NSAIDs.
  • Prognosis: good.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • After copulation, prepuce is moist.
  • Bedding can adhere and be drawn into preputial fornix.

Predisposing factors

General

  • Copulation.

Specific

  • Long hair (Peruvian breed) may also stick to the moist prepuce.

Pathophysiology

  • Bedding sticking to moist prepuce.

Timecourse

  • Usually within a hour or so of copulation.
