Overview

  • The term leukocyte includes all white blood cells (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, lymphocytes) and their precursors.
  • Leukocytes protect the body against foreign substances by phagocytosis and antibody production:
    • Granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils ) and monocytes are all phagocytic cells.
    • Lymphocytes produce antibodies (B cells), or are concerned with cell-mediated immunity (T cells).
  • Lymphocytes and neutrophils are the predominant white blood cells in ferrets.

Tests

Methodologies

  • Manual hemocytometer: accuracy +/- 20%; not commonly used in ferrets.
  • Electronic counting systems: accuracy +/- 3-5%.
  • QBC-V hematology system.
  • Automated differentials provide useful information but are not an alternative to blood smear evaluation.

  • All commercial laboratories and selected practices.

Sensitivity

  • Sensitive.

Specificity

  • Non-specific.

Predictive value

  • Useful if used in conjunction with differential white blood cell counts and other diagnostic techniques.

Technique (intrinsic) limitations

  • Leukocyte counts cannot provide a specific diagnosis in isolation.

Technician (extrinsic) limitations

  • Repeatability.
  • Level of skill.
