Introduction

  • Cause: infestation with Ixodes ricinus tick(s).
  • Signs: anemia, erythema, inflammation.
  • Diagnosis: visible ticks.
  • Treatment: remove manually; ivermectin.
  • Prognosis: good.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Infestation with Ixodes ricinus tick(s) .
  • The ferret may pick up ticks when hunting.
  • This is unlikely to occur in pet ferrets housed indoors.
  • I. ricinus may cause anemia.
  • Ticks can act as vectors for many diseases in many animals, but this has not been documented in pet ferrets.

Predisposing factors

General

  • Being outdoors.
  • More common in working ferrets.

Epidemiology

  • Rare in ferrets kept indoors.
