Penile trauma

4ferrets

Introduction

  • Cause: trauma to the penis and/or prepuce from bedding, scraping of penis on flooring, or fracture to the os penis tip.
  • Signs: penile swelling, possible preputial swelling/bruising/laceration.
  • Diagnosis: history and clinical signs, radiography.
  • Treatment: foreign body removal (bedding), antibacterial cream, systemic NSAIDs/antimicrobials. If urethral occlusion/obstruction has occurred, catheterization may be necessary. It is not common for occlusion or obstruction to occur with os penis fracture in the author’s experience, although it could happen. The catheter may only be necessary until inflammation is relieved.
  • Prognosis: good if urethra is not damaged or if obstruction occurs.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Seen in ferrets kept on hay bedding as the grass awns may catch in the prepuce.
  • Ferrets that move along the ground pressing their ventrum down to mark their territory may scrape the prepuce.
  • The os penis tip may be fractured from trauma, including falling.

Predisposing factors

General

  • Intact ferrets are more likely to damage the prepuce while marking territory.

Timecourse

  • Depends on severity of trauma and amount of inflammation and pain due to the trauma.
