Contributor(s): Christopher Brown, Tim Donovan, Jeffrey Watkins, Renate Weller, Chris Whitton

Introduction

For assessment of lung disease in the equine thorax   Radiography: overview  .

Uses

Advantages

  • Useful to show extent of advanced lesions.
  • A portable x-ray machine   Radiography: portable x-ray unit  can produce useful results in the foal and when used in conjunction with a digital radiography system also of the caudodorsal lungfield of a standard sized adult horse.
  • Radiography can provide additional information to auscultation of the thorax   Thorax: auscultation  , especially in the foal.

Disadvantages

  • Radiographic signs often lag behind clinical signs and ultrasonography is often more useful.
  • Evaluation of the whole lung field in the standard sized adult horse requires a high-output x-ray generator and the use of a grid and is hence limited to hospital settings.
  • Most equine pulmonary diseases require a great deal of expertise in the interpretation
  • Exact location of pathology is often impossible since only lateral projections can be obtained.
