Third eyelid: trauma - repair

Introduction

  • Traumatic injury to the third eyelid is not common in this species - may occur with eyelid lacerations   Eyelid: trauma  or other ocular trauma .
  • Can involve the conjunctiva only or the cartilage of the third eyelid as well.
  • The primary goal of repair is to restore apposition of the edges of the conjunctiva and, in particular, to repair the third eyelid margin.

Uses

  • Repair of lacerations of the third eyelid.

Advantages

  • Primary intention healing leads to a superior functional and cosmetic result.
  • Decrease chances of irritation to cornea.

Disadvantages

  • Requires general anesthesia (GA).
  • Expensive.

Prognosis

  • Fair to good if repaired by surgical means.
  • Guarded if left to heal by secondary intention.
