Synonym(s): Perineoplasty

Introduction

  • For some mares, particularly old multiparous mares with a severe sunken anus and perineal body, the correction of pneumovagina   Vagina: pneumovagina  by a Caslick's Operation   Vulva: Caslick operation  may not be successful   Vulva: poor conformation 02  .
  • A perineal body reconstruction or perineoplasty has been developed to restore the vulvar and vestibular seals and therefore correct pneumovagina in these cases.
  • It effectively raises the perineal body and returns the vulva to a more vertical position   Vulva: conformation 01 - broodmare    Vulva: 80 degree vulval conformation  .

Uses

  • Treatment of pneumovagina   Vagina: pneumovagina  in older multiparous mares with a sunken anus/vulvar conformation or those mares that have had extensive second-degree rectovestibular injuries   Perineum: trauma  .

Advantages

  • Moderately straightforward.
  • Standing procedure.
  • No special equipment required.
  • Raises perineal body and returns vulva to a more vertical position without appreciably shortening vulval opening.

Disadvantages

  • Technically more complicated than Caslick's operation   Vulva: Caslick operation  .
  • Longer period of sexual rest after operation.
  • Decreases vestibular opening size.
