Eyelid: procaine penicillin injection - entropion

Introduction

  • Treatment for entropion   Eyelid: entropion  - to evert eyelids preventing contact of cilia with globe.
  • Most commonly seen in neonatal foals   Eyelid: entropion 01  .
  • The vast majority of cases is lower eyelid only.

Uses

  • Entropion - especially in secondary cases due to systemic illness or prematurity, ie temporary, self-limiting condition   Eyelid: entropion  where:
    • Response to eyelid manipulation/topical ointments is poor.
    • Condition is severe initially.

Advantages

  • Simple.
  • Minimally invasive.
  • No special equipment required.
  • No sutures to remove.

Disadvantages

  • Only present for 36-48 h.
  • Should not be repeated.

Prognosis

  • Often effective in secondary entropion if the primary systemic problem is treated effectively.
  • Rarely totally effective in primary entropion.
