Overview

  • Mares mated when they have an acute endometritis have an increased incidence of conception or pregnancy failure, so it is important to identify cases for treatment before mating.
  • Endometrial cytology (smear test) provides a useful method of detecting an inflammatory process in the uterus.
  • The presence of PMNs indicates acute endometritis.

Method

  • Test simplet:
    • Make smear by rolling onto stained area of slide.
    • Label slide with pencil.
    • Leave at room temperature for 2 min.
    • Wash off background stain under gently running tap.
    • Allow to dry and coverslip.
    • Examine with microscope.

Availability

  • Minimal specialized equipment.
  • Standard practice laboratory.
  • A reasonable quality laboratory microscope is essential.

Technique (intrinsic) limitations

  • Cells are examined and the percentage of epithelial cells and PMNs is estimated.
  • With experience, this can be done by 'eye-balling'.
