Blood: mean corpuscular volume (MCV)

Synonym(s): MCV

Contributor(s): Robert Shull, Frank Taylor

Overview

  • Average volume of red blood cells.
  • Measured in femtoliters (fl).
  • Calculated from hematocrit   Blood: packed cell volume (PCV)  divided by RBC count   Blood: erythrocyte count (RBC)  - may be inaccurate as RBC count may be unreliable.
  • Can be directly measured by new laser counters which provide a distribution curve of red cell size.
  • Macrocytosis (increased MCV) resulting from release of immature RBC from the bone marrow during regeneration is very rare in the horse therefore the MCV is less useful in the horse than in other species.
