Overview

  • Circulating mononuclear cells.
  • Produced in the lymph nodes, spleen and lymphoid follicles.
  • Leukemia is rare in horses but may be dramatic (75-750 x 10^3/ul).
  • Physiologic lymphocytosis associated with excitement or exercise is common in horses under 2 years of age.
  • Very low levels (<1,000 /ul) in foals may indicate (severe) combined immune deficiency syndrome (CID/SCID) or Fell Pony Immunodeficiency Disorder.
