  • Large referral practices, educational institutions, neonatal intensive care units, large surgical facilities.

Technique (intrinsic) limitations

In adults
  • Measurement of resting blood gases is of limited use as severe pathology must be present before PaO2 decreases.
  • Measurement of PaO2 during exercise will however assist in pinpointing the lung as the source of inadequate performance.
