Blood: eosinophils

Contributor(s): Annalisa Barrelet, Robert Shull, Frank Taylor

Overview

  • Granulocytic cells.
  • Parasitocidal effects and moderate inflammatory reactions involving mast cells.
  • Normally only present in low numbers, this makes eosinopenia clinically insignificant.
  • Eosinophilia is a possible, but inconsistent indicator of allergic or parasitic disease.
  • Corticosteroid administration causes a reduction in eosinophils within 2 h, numbers remain low for 24-36 h.
