Indications

  • Oxytetracycline-sensitive infections.
  • Broad spectrum activity, including:
  • Mycobacteriumspp,Proteus vulgaris,Pseudomonasaeruginosaand someMycoplasmaspp tend to be resistant.
  • Limited activity againstStaphylococciand theEnterobacteriaceae.
  • Drug of choice for Potomac horse fever   Potomac Horse Fever  and equine ehrlichiosis   Anaplasmosis  .
  • Has been used to treat flexural limb deformities in foals.

Interactions

with other drugs

  • Corticosteroids increase risk of enterocolitis.
  • Antacids and kaolin mixtures reduce oral bioavailability of oxytetracycline.
  • Enhanced anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
  • Reduced activity of concurrently administered bactericidal antimicrobials such as the beta-lactams.
