Farriery: Styrofoam support system

Synonym(s): The Styrofoam support system

Contributor(s): Graham Munroe, David Nicholls, Haydn Price

Introduction

  • The Styrofoam support system is intended to provide first aid support and should be applied if there is suspicion of a laminitis   Foot: laminitis  attack. The system can also be applied in cases of sore feet.
  • The system addresses natural weightbearing issues by providing uniform support for the frog, sole and bars in the caudal 2/3rds of the foot. This is accomplished without causing local ischemia and pressure necrosis which often plagues systems reliant on frog support alone.
  • The Styrofoam support system is not a cure for laminitis and should be applied in combination with medical treatments to treat the disease process.
  • Immediate comfort is usually seen when the Styrofoam Support System is correctly applied at the onset of a laminitis attack. Correct medical treatment and second support block application stage protocol are followed. This will provide soft protection to the distal border of the distal phalanx and promote increased blood supply, thus starting the healing process.
