  • MigratingS. vulgarislarvae   Strongylus spp  .
  • Trauma?
  • Infection?

Predisposing factors

General
  • Irregular/ineffective parasite control.

Specific

Pathophysiology

  • MigratingS. vulgarislarve   →   damage endothelium   →   inflammation and thickening   →   turbulence   →   thrombus formation   →   compromised blood supply to hind limb.
  • With time, possible that recanalization occurs +/- development of collateral circulation   →   clinical improvement.
  • In UK 90% of horses have vascular lesions attributable to migrating larvae.

Timecourse

  • Chronic.
  • May be acute.
