Stifle: crimped nylon fabellotibial sutures

Synonym(s): Crimped nylon fabellar sutures

Introduction

Uses

  • Reduces excessive cranial drawer motion Stifle: cranial drawer test.
  • Prevents excessive internal tibial rotation.
  • Stabilize stifle joint.

Advantages

  • Foreign material is outside the joint environment.
  • Technically relatively straightforward.
  • Provides immediate stability.
  • Well established and tested technique.

Disadvantages

  • Theoretically less isometric than intracapsular stabilization Stifle: intra-articular stabilization.
  • May cause excessive external tibial rotation.
  • Permanent foreign material placed immediately adjacent to joint.
  • Relatively high short term morbidity - dogs often uncomfortable for several days following surgery.
  • Risk of infection.
