Peel-away sheath catheter

Introduction

  • To introduce a large bore flexible silicon catheter with lockable stylet into a large vein such as the jugular vein.

Uses

  • → Blood sampling.
  • → Administering intravenous fluids.
  • → Administering intravenous drugs.
  • → Monitoring central venous pressure (CVP).

Advantages

  • Simple procedure.
  • Can be performed without anesthesia.

Disadvantages

  • Bleeds more than Seldinger technique - easily controlled with light pressure dressing.
