Marsupialization: paraprostatic cyst

Introduction

  • The creation of a fistula between a paraprostatic cyst and the skin.

Uses

  • Treatment of paraprostatic cysts, prostatic cysts and abscesses.
  • Regarded (inappropriately) as a definitive therapy for these lesions.
  • Used in conjunction with appropriate antibiotic therapy and castration Castration as neccessary.

Advantages

  • Provides ventral drainage until causative factors are eliminated.

Disadvantages

  • The fistula will continue to drain fluid or pus for as long as it is produced; this may mean many months or even years.
