  • Or use cytocentrifuge for concentration of cells.
  • Air dry slide.

Availability

  • Widely available at commercial laboratories.
  • Smears can be examined in practice.

Technique (intrinsic) limitations

  • CSF samples can be contaminated with blood.
  • CSF cytology may change as CNS illness progresses.

Technician (extrinsic) limitations

  • Some experience is necessary in interpreting cell types in cytologic preparations.
