Hypercalcitonism

Introduction

  • Cause: high dietary calcium induces hypercalcemia which stimulates calcitonin production and thus inhibits bone resorption.
  • High dietary calcium stimulates gastrin production which also stimulates calcitonin and maintains hypercalcitonism.
  • Normal bone growth depends on a proper balance between apposition and resorption; calcitonin prevents resorption and also prevents normal maturation of growth cartilage.
  • Hypercalcitonism implicated in osteochondrosis Osteochondrosis , panosteitis Panosteitis , hip dysplasia Hip: dysplasia , Wobbler syndrome Cervical spondylopathy , hypertrophic osteodystrophy Hypertrophic osteopathy.
