Introduction

  • Intermittent episodes of diarrhea - rarely truly chronic.
  • Mainly of large bowel origin.
  • Cause: precipitated by stress.
  • Diagnosis: no definitive test.
  • Treatment: variable success.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Unknown: stress may trigger abnormal intestinal motility.

Predisposing factors

General
  • Stress: concurrent disease, emotional stimuli.

Pathophysiology

  • Unknown, non-inflammatory, may be abnormal motility.

Timecourse

  • Within hours of stress factor, (unless stress constant).
