Carpus: ectrodactyly

Introduction

  • Rare congenital, probably heritable condition due to abnormal cleavage of embryological limb bud.
  • Foot is obviously split and carpal, metacarpal and phalangeal bones may not all develop.
  • Conservative treatment usual, although arthrodesis has been tried.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Congenital, probably heritable.

Pathophysiology

  • Congenital developmental anomaly due to abnormal cleavage of embryonic limb bud.
  • Abnormal cleavage of embryonic limb bud causes obviously split foot.
  • Carpal, metacarpal and phalyngeal bones may not all develop.
