Introduction

  • Water is an essential nutrient for dairy cattle, although its importance is commonly overlooked.
  • Water is required for:
    • Milk production (milk is 87% water).
    • Digestion and metabolism of energy and nutrients.
    • Transport in circulation of nutrients and metabolites to and from tissues.
    • Excretion of waste products (via urine, feces, and respiration).
    • Maintenance of proper electrolyte, fluid, and heat balance.
    • Development of the calf and associated uterine fluids.
