Introduction

  • Heart murmurs in the neonate may not always be pathological. Physiological murmurs may be auscultated during the first 5 days of life prior to the closure of the ductus arteriosus.
  • Pathological murmurs may result from:
    • Congenital anomalies.
      • In neonatal calves the most common congenital heart defect is the incomplete closure of the ventricular septum.
      • Other congenital defects include: atrial septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, tetralogy of fallot and eisemengers complex.
      • Severe anemia.
      • Infectious valvular disease.
