  • Digestive and secretory function, eg bile salts for fat emulsification.
  • Metabolism of carbohydrate, protein and fat.
  • Detoxification/excretory function.
  • Synthesis of clotting factors and proteins.
  • Storage of vitamins and minerals.

Etiology of primary liver disease

  • Damage to hepatocytes.
  • Obstruction of the biliary system.
  • Hyperlipemia and hepatic lipidosis.
  • Can occur with toxemia, septicemia , right-sided heart failure, aflatoxicosis, heavy metal poisoning (eg lead), ascending biliary tract infection etc.
