Caesarean: aftercare of the cow and calf (Farmer Factsheet)

Contributor(s): Paul Wood , Adam Dunstan-Martin

What is a caesarean section?

  • A cesarean section is an emergency or elective procedure undertaken in cases of calving problems or predicted calving problems that cannot be corrected by other means.
  • It is a major surgery for cattle and requires both the surgeon and farmer working closely together for best outcomes. It is essential that good aftercare can be provided for both cow and calf.
  • The procedure is associated with an increased risk of infertility and culling of the dam.
