Weight

  • The Highland is slow-growing and slow-maturing, though its size and growth improve under more benign conditions.
  • The size of mature cows is 500–550 kg.

Height

  • Withers height of 106 cm and girth of 188 cm.

Colors and distinguishing features

  • Although red-brown is the most usual color (ca. 60%), a range of other colors are found, including:
    • Yellow (22%).
    • Black (7%).
    • Dun/brindle (6%).
    • Very pale (sometimes known as silver) (5%).
  • Long widespread horns remain a typical feature of the breed.
  • The breed has a thick latch of hair between the horns.
    • In Scotland, any cattle forelock may be referred to as a “dossan”. This term is not specific to the Highland breed.
