Weight

  • The mature animals are medium-sized.
  • Cows weigh 450–500 kg and bulls weigh 600–700 kg.

Height

  • 137cm or more.

Colors and distuingishing features

  • Originally, elgible cattle varied in color, including ‘white, red and black in any mixture and shade except roan, no instance of which is known to have occurred.
  • Brindle is not uncommon, but in the mid-nineteenth century black-and-white was the main color.
  • The first Guernsey champion bull at the Royal Show was black-and-white. The nose may be either white or black.’
  • The two herd books were published in competition with each other for 15 years, but eventually there was general recognition of the book published by RGA&HS, which also determined the color of purebred Guernseys on 24 February 1883 by adopting an article stating that it should be ‘red or fawn and white’. This remains the accepted color.
