Colors and distinguishing features

  • Predominantly black. Dun (which is recessive to black) is recognized and accepted for registration. Occasionally red.
  • Double coated; a long, shaggy, weather-resistant overcoat and a fine, mossy undercoat. Thick skinned and ‘heavy’ hide.
    • All parts of body are hairy, even inside the ears.
  • Polled.
    • Originally predominantly horned. The easier handling of the polled cattle led to the horned variety being phased out by 1780 to produce the polled variety of today.
  • Small/medium-sized breed, typical of types of cattle which evolved in hill and mountain environment.
    • Larger types have been developed in North America due to the differing environment.
  • Compact and short-legged.
  • Very hardy.
