One of Four Known Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtles Dies

One of only four Yangtze Giant Softshell turtles known to exist has died in Suzhou zoo in southern China, leaving only three survivors of the world's rarest turtle species...
Experts had tried to artificially inseminate the female turtle, which was over 90, shortly before she died.

The species had become so rare due to hunting, overfishing and the destruction of its habitat.

The female's death leaves one male, thought to be over 100 years old, in the Chinese zoo with two other turtles living wild in Vietnam.
