Endocrine: erythropoietin

Synonym(s): EPO, erythropoietin stimulating factor, erythrogenin

Contributor(s): Ruth Morgan, Han van der Kolk

Introduction

  • Erythropoietin (EPO) is the hormone responsible for erythropoiesis; the generation of red blood cells.
  • It is of importance to realise that the administration of recombinant human erythropoietin to horses may cause severe, life-threatening, anemia.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • The anemia may be a result of development of antibodies that cross-react with endogenous erythropoietin, thereby inhibiting erythropoiesis based on the results of clonogenic assays forin vitroproliferation of erythroid colony forming units and erythroid burst forming units.

Pathophysiology

  • The anemia may be a result of development of antibodies that cross-react with endogenous erythropoietin, thereby inhibiting erythropoiesis.
  • The anemia may be a result of development of antibodies that cross-react with endogenous erythropoietin, thereby inhibiting erythropoiesis based on the results of clonogenic assays forin vitroproliferation of erythroid colony forming units and erythroid burst forming units.

Timecourse

  • The onset of anemia may take no more than 2 months to occur.
